I tutor students from middle school through adults, in reading comprehension, vocabulary, and writing skills. Topic focus is nature, animals, and their experiences, and other topics of student interest. If needed, syllable instruction is also provided, for recognizing and decoding longer words. Language coaching is done online, or the North Durham library. The commitment needed for reading and/or writing skill improvement, is for the fall, spring, or summer semester. A complete assessment of current reading skills comes first, then an e-mail summary.
I also provide developmental assessments and consultations to parents of young children who are non-readers, or who are having trouble learning to read .I use stuffed animal mascots to help these children focus in the assessment sessions. I can inform parents, on many ways to improve listening and reading skills at home with games, or even while riding in the car.
For students with special needs, our stuffed animal mascots learn along with us. They are always a bit behind the students (!), and need to have concepts explained by the student so they can learn.. They all have names (created by students). There is David the rabbit, and Diddi Con, the monkey, along with other animals native to North Carolina, such as Randy the raccoon and Toby the turtle. Mrs. Owl adds her wisdom to our sessions. In this way young students learn about native North Carolina animals, gain academic skills, and greater awareness of our natural world,
I consider recent school assessments, grades, and teacher comments, as I create a tutoring plan to develop learning goals for individual students, including those who have attentional and learning processing challenges. If tutoring is desired, a calendar schedule is set up, and agreement reached on how we will work together.
For young children, activities vary between playing learning games, reading lists of phonetically similar words, and reading and writing on topics of student interest. Individualized journals and word files are created. These provide hands-on learning experiences. Word attack, fluency, and basic comprehension are the skills that are the focus of tutoring at this age. ,
For reading comprehension and vocabulary online, activities vary between using levelled reading books, co-creating Google Docs, and use of the Web to find reading material of interest. We may also share workbooks, which include vocabulary crosswords and comprehension skills.
For young children, I teach a phonics-based, sequenced skill reading curriculum, based originally on the Orton Gillingham method. Over 250 students have increased their knowledge with Read 'N Write It! Tutoring.
I am currently providing assessments and hour-long consultations for young children, in-person writing tutoring, or 50-minute online reading tutoring sessions..
